How best to cut hair with thinning scissors?

I need a hair cut, but the festive period has left my finances somewhat drained, so can't quite stretch to the hairdressers.

I have thinning scissors, which I would like to use to do something with it, as I regularly get it thinned out at the hairdressers and love the effect you get with them.

Any tips on the best way to do this? Please don't waste time telling me to go to a professional etc, after all, it's only hair, so if I really do something that bad, it will grow back.

It depends on the length of your hair, but basically you are best to lift small sections and cut at 45 degree angles, nothing sharper than that. Remember to keep the teeth side up and the straight side down towards your scalp and that way you should avoid scissor marks.

If your hair is long enough to put in a band, then section it so that it is pulled straight and snip the ends with the scissors.

If your hair is short, run the scissors through your hair in lines about 3mm apart.

Hope this helps, I would do it for you if you were here.

Don't use them too close to your roots, or your hair will and up going all frizzy on the top.

Go from where your hair starts to go down your head instead of across your scalp, then just snip to your hearts content really.

If you want it a lot thinner then section it first, starting with the bottom layer, and work your way up.

Take a thick layer (or section) of hair, and cut about one-third of the length on the hair shaft away from the scalp. Let part of the layer drop. Take the now thinner layer of hair, and cut about one-half of the length of the hair shaft. Let part of the layer drop. Take the now even thinner section (or layer) of hair and cut about one-quarter of the length of the hair shaft. The secret to a layered cut is the first layer being longer than the second two layers.

Ok, depends what style your going for but too much off at first, and make sure you section it well and perhaps get a freind to help you with the back to make sure its even.

Why not check out some female barbers in local barbershops many of them worked in salons b4 and im sure would give you a cheaper haircut than a salon would.
